Comm Lab Walter Benjamin

Walter Benjamin's The work of art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction basically talks about the idea of aura and questions whether an object's aura disappears with mechanical reproduction. In the digital world of today the question of aura and truth are further complicated. When Benjamin was writing the idea that a photograph could be massed produced and was seen as a reproduction of reality was new. Today we are used to photography's reproduction. What interests me is the idea of truth and how i no longer believe that any image I see is not digitally manipulated. It might still have an aura and wow me but I do not believe that it was what was framed in the view finder. Most photographers enhance their images, tweak the color or even combine negatives. These images are often presented without acknowledging this manipulation.

The following 3 videos were made in response to Benjamin.
